What your rating has been doing, over four windows and three kinds of opponent

Your rating is a single number, and it is free. Form is what that number has been doing: the last 7, 30, 90 and 365 days, your record against stronger, equal and weaker opponents, and the wins the arithmetic expected against the wins you got. €3.99 a month.

The four windows

Form is read over the last 7, 30, 90 and 365 days. Four rather than one, because a fortnight of bad luck and a year of slow decline are different things and a single figure hides both.

Each window counts only rated matches inside it, so a window you did not play in says so rather than repeating the window before it. The same four windows are used everywhere in SetMatcher, on your own profile and on a ladder, so two screens cannot mean different things by "recent".

Against stronger, equal and weaker

Every rated match falls into one of three bands: the opponent was stronger, about equal, or weaker. The split is what turns a win and loss record into something you can act on, because eight wins over weaker players and two losses to stronger ones is a different season from the reverse, and both read as eight and two.

The band is read from what the rating made of that match on the day it was played, never from what anybody is rated today. A player who has improved all year does not retroactively turn every old win into a win over a weaker opponent, which is exactly what a careless reading would do.

Expected against achieved

The rating engine gives each side an expected share of every match before it is played, from the gap between the two ratings. Add those shares up over a window and you have the number of wins the arithmetic expected; beside it is the number you actually got.

That pair is the most honest one-line summary of a season there is. Eleven wins from twenty against an expectation of eight is a good run whoever you played; eleven from twenty against an expectation of fifteen is not, and no league table would have told you.

What the free plan already shows

The rating itself, its whole history as a chart, every match that moved it and by how much, the ladder you sit on, and the page that works the arithmetic out in full. None of that is behind a plan and none of it ever will be.

What Plus adds is the reading: the windows, the bands and the expectation. The results underneath were always yours and always visible, and if you cancel they stay exactly as visible as they were.
